Modern traffic planning ensures that cyclists have free travel. Well-structured cycling facilities increase the attractiveness enormously. Not only the establishment of cycle paths, but also cycle streets contribute to this.

In the following article you will find out what cycle streets are, how you can recognize them and what special regulations apply there.

What is a bicycle lane?

A bicycle lane may only be used by cyclists. Exceptions only apply if they are marked with an additional sign. Then they can only go 30km/h. If cycling on a cycle road is impaired by others and cyclists are endangered, a fine can be imposed.

The bicycle road traffic sign forms a white bicycle on a blue circle with a white background. Below the circle, the sign reads “Bicycle Street” in black letters.

Rules for road users on bicycle roads

These exceptions apply not only to vehicles, but also to road users such as inline skaters or pedestrians. If you are not permitted to use the cycle path by means of an additional sign, you must use the pedestrian paths. This also applies to children with bicycles under the age of eight.

If the bicycle street sign also says “Residents free”, residents are also allowed to use the street. This includes everyone whose property is connected to the cycle path. It also includes drivers who need to use one of the addresses in the residential area, either privately or for business.

Annex 2 of the StVO stipulates that the maximum speed in cycle streets is 30km/h. Cyclists must not be hindered or endangered. Therefore, other road users may have to reduce their speed further. Cyclists are also permitted to ride side by side on cycle streets. The right of way rules are the same as in regular traffic. The regulations regarding road use, such as the ban on driving on the right, should not be forgotten.
