Key Takeaways

  • Stability at Speed: E-bikes ride faster on average. A low center of gravity prevents wobbling or oscillation at 25 km/h.
  • Range & Efficiency: High-quality industrial bearings and low-rolling-resistance tires minimize drag to save your e-bike's battery.
  • High Load & Safety: The combination of a heavy e-bike and cargo requires a robust, play-free hitch and a suspended chassis.

The "electric tailwind" has changed the way we cycle. Suddenly, distances that used to take a whole day are now a relaxed morning trip. Climbs lose their terror. But anyone who uses an e-bike not just for a short commute, but as a real car replacement or for extended tours, knows the space problem. The luggage rack fills up quickly, and a heavy backpack becomes uncomfortable over time. This is where the bike trailer for e-bikes comes into play – it is the missing puzzle piece that turns your pedelec into a true transport miracle.

But be careful: The dynamics of an e-bike differ fundamentally from a traditional bike. Higher average speeds and the heavier weight of the towing bike place completely different demands on the material. A simple hardware store trailer quickly becomes unstable at 25 km/h. At Veolo, we have developed our bike trailers to keep up with the performance of your e-bike: safe, tracking true, and so smooth-running that you almost forget you're towing something.

High-Speed Stability: When 25 km/h Becomes the Standard

On a classic bicycle, 25 km/h is often the peak – on an e-bike, it's the cruising speed. Physically, this means the forces acting on the trailer increase exponentially. A bike trailer that isn't aerodynamically optimized or has a center of gravity that is too high will become unstable at this sustained speed. It starts to sway or transmits unpleasant impulses to the bicycle frame.

This is exactly where the Veolo concept comes in. Our extremely low center of gravity and wide track ensure that the trailer sits on the road like a board. Whether you're blasting over forest paths with a gravel e-bike or navigating city traffic with a city pedelec: the chassis remains calm. This isn't just a luxury, it's a safety feature. If you have to brake in a curve, the trailer must not break out and push your e-bike to the side.

Why Suspension is Indispensable for E-Bike Trailers

You might think: "I only ride on asphalt, why do I need suspension?" Physics provides the answer. Due to the higher base speed, the bike trailer feels every bump much more intensely. A pothole or curb that you barely notice at walking pace becomes a hard hit at 25 km/h.

Without suspension, the following happens:

  • Loss of Traction: The trailer "jumps." A jumping wheel cannot transmit cornering forces – the trailer breaks out more easily.
  • Material Stress: Impacts hammer unfiltered onto the hitch, the thru-axle of your expensive e-bike, and of course, your cargo.
  • Energy Loss: Every "bounce" costs forward momentum. Good damping lets the trailer glide instead of jump.

Our progressive elastomer suspension swallows this energy. The result: Your groceries stay intact, your e-bike frame is protected, and the rig follows behind silky smooth.

Range and Rolling Resistance: No Fear of a Flat Battery

A common concern among e-bike riders is range. "Won't the trailer drain my battery?" Of course, towing a load costs energy. But we have done everything to minimize this effect. A Veolo cargo trailer is trimmed for efficiency.

We use high-quality industrial bearings and proven Schwalbe BigApple tires. This combination ensures minimal rolling resistance. Many of our customers report that they hardly notice a difference on the flats in Eco or Tour mode. And the best part: Thanks to the high load capacity, you can easily carry a second battery or charger. This way, the trailer doesn't become a range killer, but a range enabler for truly great adventures.

Frequently Asked Questions about Bike Trailers on E-Bikes

Can I attach a bike trailer to my S-Pedelec (45 km/h)?

Legally, this is difficult. S-Pedelecs are subject to moped regulations. Transporting children is often prohibited, and cargo trailers require special couplings and approvals. We primarily recommend our trailers for Pedelecs (support up to 25 km/h), as trailer operation here is legally equivalent to that of a normal bicycle.

How much does the battery range decrease with a trailer?

This depends heavily on the load, the terrain profile, and your riding style. As a rule of thumb: Expect about 1/3 less range with a medium load. However, thanks to the smooth-running characteristics of the Veolo, energy loss on flat terrain is kept within limits.

Does the Veolo fit e-bikes with a rear hub motor?

With mid-drive motors, mounting via the thru-axle is usually straightforward. With hub motors in the rear wheel, the axle is often designed differently. But even here, there are almost always solutions using special adapter plates or axle nuts. It's best to contact us with a photo of your rear wheel axle!

Is braking with a heavy trailer on an e-bike dangerous?

E-bikes usually have very good hydraulic disc brakes that handle additional loads well. Important: Ride with foresight! The braking distance increases slightly due to the trailer pushing. However, the Veolo's low center of gravity prevents the trailer from lifting the rear wheel or breaking out sideways during hard braking.
