The essentials at a glance
- Stability at speed: E-bikes travel faster on average. A low center of gravity prevents swaying at 25 km/h.
- Range & efficiency: High-quality wheel bearings and low-rolling-resistance tires minimize rolling resistance to conserve the E-bike battery.
- Heavy loads & safety: The combination of a heavy E-bike and cargo requires a robust, play-free hitch and a suspension chassis.
The "electric tailwind" has changed the way we cycle. Suddenly, distances that used to be a day's journey are now a relaxed morning outing. Hills lose their bite. But anyone who uses an E-bike not just for the short commute to work, but as a true car replacement or for extended tours, knows the space problem. The luggage rack fills up quickly, and a heavy backpack becomes uncomfortable over time. This is where the bike trailer for E-bikes comes in – it is the missing piece that turns your pedelec into a true transport powerhouse.
But beware: The dynamics of an E-bike differ fundamentally from those of a conventional bike. Higher average speeds and the greater weight of the towing bike place completely different demands on the equipment. A simple trailer from a hardware store quickly becomes unstable at 25 km/h. At Veolo, we have developed our bike trailers to keep up with your E-bike's performance: safe, stable in its track, and so smooth-running that you almost forget something is attached behind you.
High-Speed Stability: When 25 km/h Becomes the Standard
On a classic bicycle, 25 km/h is often the top speed – on an E-bike, it is cruising speed. Physically, this means that the forces acting on the trailer increase exponentially. A bike trailer that is not aerodynamically optimized or has too high a center of gravity becomes unstable at this sustained speed. It begins to sway or transfers uncomfortable impulses to the bike frame.
This is exactly where the Veolo concept comes in. Our extremely low center of gravity and wide track ensure that the trailer stays planted on the road like a board. Whether you are racing along forest paths on a gravel E-bike or weaving through city traffic on a city pedelec, the chassis remains stable. This is not a luxury, but a safety feature. If you have to brake in a corner, the trailer must not break loose and push your E-bike to the side.
Why Suspension Is Essential for an E-bike Trailer
You might think: "I only ride on asphalt, so why do I need suspension?" Physics provides the answer. Because of the higher basic speed, the bike trailer feels every bump much more intensely. A pothole or curb that you barely notice at walking speed becomes a hard impact at 25 km/h.
Without suspension, the following happens:
- Loss of ground contact: The trailer "jumps." A jumping wheel cannot transmit lateral guidance forces – the trailer is more likely to break loose.
- Material stress: The impacts hit the hitch, your expensive E-bike's thru-axle, and of course your cargo without any filtering.
- Energy loss: Every "bounce" costs forward momentum. Good damping lets the trailer glide instead of jump.
Our progressive elastomer suspension absorbs this energy. The result: Your groceries stay intact, your E-bike frame is protected, and the whole setup rolls along smoothly behind you.

Range and Rolling Resistance: No Need to Fear an Empty Battery
A common concern among E-bike riders is range. "Won't the trailer drain my battery?" Of course, towing a load uses energy. But we have done everything possible to minimize this effect. A Veolo cargo trailer is engineered for efficiency.
We use high-quality industrial bearings and proven Schwalbe Big Apple tires. This combination ensures minimal rolling resistance. Many of our customers report that they barely notice a difference on flat terrain in Eco or Tour mode. And here's the clever part: Thanks to the high load capacity, you can easily take a spare battery or charger with you. So the trailer does not become a range killer, but rather an enabler of long-range adventures.

Frequently Asked Questions About Bike Trailers for E-bikes
Can I attach a bike trailer to my S-Pedelec (45 km/h)?
Legally, this is complicated. S-Pedelecs are subject to moped regulations. Carrying children is generally prohibited, and cargo trailers require special hitches and approvals. We primarily recommend our trailers for pedelecs (assistance up to 25 km/h), where trailer use is legally treated the same as use with a conventional bicycle.
How much does battery range decrease with a trailer?
This depends heavily on the load, terrain, and your riding style. As a rule of thumb, expect about 1/3 less range with a moderate load. Thanks to the Veolo's low-friction characteristics, however, the energy loss on flat terrain remains limited.
Does the Veolo fit E-bikes with a rear-wheel motor?
With mid-drive motors, installation via the thru-axle is usually straightforward. With rear-wheel hub motors, the axle is often designed differently. Even here, however, there are almost always solutions using special adapter plates or axle nuts. It is best to contact us with a photo of your rear axle!
Is braking with a heavy trailer on an E-bike dangerous?
E-bikes usually have very good hydraulic disc brakes that can handle additional loads well. The important thing is to ride cautiously and anticipate traffic! The braking distance is somewhat longer because of the trailer pushing from behind. However, the Veolo's low center of gravity prevents the trailer from lifting the rear wheel or breaking sideways when braking hard.
